“From Working Drawing to Painting” with Jon DeMartin

September 11-15, 2023
9 am to 4 pm everyday

Join us for a five day workshop in which we'll explore figure drawing with Jon DeMartin.  In this workshop, we will concentrate on drawing the figure using various mediums and techniques such as black and white chalk or charcoal pencils on white or toned paper.  These methods are consistent with those employed by artists during the Renaissance, the Baroque, and the 18th century, when they made “working
drawings”  or “life sketches” which were designed as preparations for a painting. Our morning sessions will focus on short 1 min. to 20 min. poses.  Our afternoon sessions will be dedicated to a single 5-day long pose.  This will offer students the opportunity to process and implement the principles covered during our teaching sessions. We begin with the figures “action” and we end with the “;modeling of form”
a feature of a more developed work.  Presentations and demonstrations will guide the student through each phase of the drawing.

For a deeper look into drawing the figure and its construction I’d recommend my
book ‘Drawing Atelier: the figure. How to draw in the classical style’.
