Studying with the Masters: Learning from Rembrandt, Titian, Bougereau, Collier, and Peale
This course is a continuation of Session 1, providing additional time, instruction, and individualized guidance to further develop and complete your paintings.
Explore the techniques and working methods of some of history’s most influential portrait and figure painters. In this hands-on oil painting course, students will study the paintings of Rembrandt, Titian, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, John Collier, and Rembrandt Peale to better understand how these artists approached composition, drawing, value, color, edges, and the illusion of form.
Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual instruction, students will examine how each master built a painting from the initial drawing and underpainting through the development of flesh, light, shadow, and surface detail. Particular attention will be given to the ways these artists used limited palettes, transparent and opaque layers, warm and cool color relationships, and carefully controlled edges to create convincing figures and portraits.
Students will apply these principles to their own paintings while learning to analyze masterworks not simply as finished images, but as examples of problem-solving and technique. The course is designed to encourage both technical skill and a deeper understanding of traditional oil painting methods.

Figure Drawing
Live nude model · Two four-week poses · Eight weeks total
Graphite or charcoal · Choose your own size
This eight-week class is divided into two four-week poses, with artists working from a live nude model. The extended poses give students the time to develop each drawing carefully and thoughtfully, rather than working through quick studies.
Each four-week pose begins with establishing accurate proportions, gesture, and the underlying structural masses of the figure. As the drawing develops, students will refine the anatomy and use the separation of light and shadow to describe volume, form, and surface anatomy, working toward a convincing representation and likeness of the model.
The extended format allows artists to move beyond quick figure studies and develop a deeper understanding of the human form

Live nude model
No formal instruction; questions and feedback are welcome
For entry into the building the front doors will be open from 5:45pm-6:00pm.
Join us for an open figure drawing session featuring a live nude model. Each session includes a series of quick poses for gesture and movement studies, followed by one long pose for the remainder of the class, allowing artists to develop a more finished drawing.
This is an open, self-directed drawing session with no formal instruction. Artists work independently at their own pace and in their chosen medium. The instructor will be present throughout the session and available to answer questions, offer guidance, or provide feedback upon request.

October 28 - December 16 (8 sessions)
Explore the fundamentals of figurative sculpture through the study of the female nude torso. Working from a live model, students will learn to observe and translate the human form into three-dimensional clay.
The class will focus on establishing proportion, structure, anatomy, gesture, and the major planes of the body while developing the sculpture from simple masses into a more refined and expressive form. Demonstrations and individual instruction will guide students through the sculpting process, making the class suitable for both beginners and experienced artists looking to strengthen their understanding of the figure.
Materials are included in the class fee.
Students may wish to bring an apron or other protective clothing, as working with clay can be messy.
